There is almost no greater feeling than to wake up in the mountains. Not long ago, on a bitter November morning, I awoke with hate in my heart.

I awoke in the shadow of Crosier Mountain, an unremarkable peak that towers over the tiny riverside town of Glen Haven, Colorado. Up the valley and around a little ridge you’ll find Estes Park, at the foot of Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s a very popular tourist destination, especially in the summer. Glen Haven is nothing though, it’s not even really a town. We might have fifty people total. There’s a post office, a general store with excellent baked goods, and my own personal venture– the Screaming Cat Inn & Tavern. I live in a little room on the second floor. There, one particularly dark morning, I stirred in the wee hours because I’d left the window open and made an excruciatingly cold little trek over to close it. A thin dust of snow had collected on the windowsill. Embers sizzled in the fireplace.
Outside, the air looked like thick black velvet. A crescent moon provided just enough contrast to make the low clouds appear impenetrable. And to reflect silvery-green from a pair of eyes situated in the trees across the river. I knew they would be there. Watching me. I had long become used to it by then. But that morning, the sight inspired in me a heartache I hadn’t felt in years. A force I knew I could not resist, welling up inside me, it pulled me towards the shadow of the next mountain, looming heavily in the distance. I couldn’t get my things together fast enough. A second longer, and winter would sweep the entire front range, and leave my business unfinished for months, or years, or forever. I left before the sun rose, cold, sweaty, and overwhelmed with dread. I locked up and didn’t even leave a note for my OH WOULD YOU JUST PLEASE. First you nag me for days and days to tell the story, then you don’t want to hear it. Yes, thank you. God. I don’t even remember what I was saying.
No, it’s not about a monster. Despite what people have said. Despite anything you may have heard.
It’s not just the one at the end, actually. There’s like seven monsters. You’d have to pick one. Listen. No. Just listen. There are no monsters, ok? That’s the very first misconception I’m going to dispel. Sometimes I used to say the monster was me, but that was dumb. That was me telling people about this part of my life when it wasn’t even over yet.
